Huge Charity Event being organised in aid of Christie's Cancer Appeal

If you're a regular visitor to Our Lady's Club in Widnes, then you will no doubt have heard the very sad news that Nipper's 23 year old son "John Rigby" has been diagnosed with a rare form of Bone Cancer.

Shockingly, only 75 cases have been diagnosed with this illness in the entire UK.

We were moved when we talked to Nipper and Joanne about it and felt we had to do something to not only raise awareness of the illness, but to raise funds for the Christie's appeal in an effort to help research and try to make a difference however small.

In an effort to raise much needed funds, Valleytaff Discos and Sweet Sensations Catering are planning a full out event on September 12th 2008 at Our Lady's and urge all members and non members who use the club to give generously and support the event.

The plans are going at a rapid pace and already we have secured some high class acts to perform in an effort to raise money: so far we have arranged:

Top class (adult) Comedy Magic act
A young female singer who will be making her debut on this night
A top local female singer who is extremely popular
A donation from Sweet Sensations Catering of free Hot Pot
Raffles
Auctions (details coming soon)
Disco and Karaoke donated by Valleytaff Discos

These are just some of the planned attractions and more are still at the "scribbled on paper stage"

With your help we CAN make a difference, so please show your support.

‘Christie's’ is the name of the charity that raises funds for the Christie Hospital - one of the largest cancer treatment centres in Europe. It raises funds to help us provide extra patient services and undertake important research

Our vision is a future without cancer and we want to provide ever more effective treatments for our patients so their chances of surviving cancer are greatly increased.

To do this we need money - to buy equipment and pay for the expertise that is crucial to making advances in cancer treatment. And every advance we make buys someone more time.

Please do what you can to support Christie’s. Your help could go a long way towards paying for projects that could dramatically improve treatment for patients and take us all towards a future without cancer.

Rachel Fielding, Cystic Fibrosis Trust

On 1st November 2008, Rachel will be flying to New Delhi India to take part in a challenge to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Her challenge is a six week trek over the foot hills of the Himalayas to the home of the Dali Lama in Dharamsala. After acclimatising and recovering from jetlag in Delhi, Rachel will travel to the foot hills of on of the worlds greatest mountain ranges, home to the mighty Mount Everest, this is where her challenge begins.

During the challenge Rachel will trekking for up to 8 hours a day at high altitudes and with steep climbs, with only basic facilities and facing extreme weather conditions. Rachel knows this will be a physically demanding challenge and will be training hard in the months leading up to the departure to ensure she completes it.

Rachel has always wanted to see this part of the world and those who know her will know that once she set her mind on something she generally goes ahead and completes it.
As a single female, Rachel wouldn't feel afe going to such a remote place by herself and isn't really one for a package deal where you get to see a resort complex and none of the real country your visiting so this is the next best thing!

Rachel is traveling with a group of between 12 and 20 people led by a trained expedition leader. This is by no means a holiday, but the physical challenge is a small price to pay, as well as getting to see an amazing place, Rachel also needs to raise greatly needed funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Cystic Fibrosis is the UK's most common life threatening inherited disease. It is caused by a single faulty gene that controls the movement of salts through the body. The internal organs (mainly the lungs and digestive system) become clogged with thick mucus which causes infections and inflammation making it hard to breathe and digest food.

FACTS:

Cystic Fibrosis affects over 8,000 people in the UK
in the UK, 1 person in 25 carries the faulty gene
Each week, 5 babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis
Each week, 3 young lives are lost to Cystic Fibrosis
Average life expectancy is around 31 years

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK's only National charity dealing with all aspects of CF. They fund research to treat and cure CF. Their aim is to ensure that all those with CF and their families receives the right care, support, information and advice.

Please support Rachel and help her to raise much needed funds for this amazing charity.
